John (Jack) Martindale Aird was born 09th July 1878 at Liverpool, the son of Thomas Aird and his wife Maria (nee Condliff) who had married in 1876 at St Catherine's Church, Liverpool. He was baptised on 13th August 1878 at St Silas C. of E. Church, Pembroke Place, Liverpool. The family address was given as address 8 Nevison Street, his father's occupation was listed as a fish salesman.   

The 1891 Census shows the family listed as visitors at Durning Road, West Derby, Liverpool. The head of the household is Robert Brooks aged 22, born 1869 and he is a book-keeper who was born in Birkenhead. His wife Sarah is also aged 22 and was born in Liverpool and has no occupation listed. The Aird family consists of the father Thomas aged 32, employed as a fish-monger. His wife Maria is aged 30 and she has no occupation listed. They have six children at the time of the Census, John Martindale aged 13, Thomas Henry aged 11, Elizabeth aged 10 and Mary aged 6 are all scholars, Nellie is aged 4, Lillian aged 2 and Ernest born 1891. There is also a servant Nellie Beadley aged 24, born 1867 in Liverpool at the address. 

The 1901 Census shows the family living at 14, Nelson Road, West Derby, Liverpool. His father Thomas aged 42, born 1859 is a plumber and was born in Liverpool, whilst his mother, Maria is also aged 42, born 1859 in Liverpool as were all their children and she has no occupation listed. They have five children at the time of the Census, John Martindale aged 22, born 1879 whose occupation is a painter, Mary aged 15, born 1886 is a cigar maker, Nellie aged 13 born 1888, Lillian aged 12, born 1889 and Constance aged 9, born 1892. They also have a visitor staying May Hughes aged 22, born 1879 in Liverpool. 

His mother Maria died in September 1904.

John was the husband of Ellen Elizabeth (nee Roberts) who were married in 1905.

The 1911 Census shows John and his family living at 72 Edgeware Street Edge Hill Liverpool. John is aged 32, and is a house painter. His wife Ellen Elizabeth is aged 25, born 1886 in Liverpool. They have been married for six years and have two children, John Henry aged 3, born 1908 and Stanley born 1911.

He enlisted in Liverpool and was serving in the 18th Battalion, The King’s Liverpool Regiment as Private No 331166 when he was killed in action on the 06th October, 1917 aged 39 during the Third Battle of Ypres.

Enemy shelled heavily, all calibres and trench mortars on shell holes and Picquet Line. Direct hit on No.10 post. Retaliation shoot by our artillery with good results. 50 O.R. transferred to 17th (Service) Battalion. King’s (Liverpool Regimentt).

John has no known grave and is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.

Those United Kingdom and New Zealand servicemen who died after August 16th 1917 are named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, a site which marks the furthest point reached by Commonwealth forces in Belgium until nearly the end of the war.

The Tyne Cot Memorial now bears the names of almost 35,000 officers and men whose graves are not known. The memorial, designed by Sir Herbert Baker with sculpture by Joseph Armitage and F.V. Blundstone, was unveiled by Sir Gilbert Dyett on 20 June 1927.

The memorial forms the north-eastern boundary of Tyne Cot Cemetery, which was established around a captured German blockhouse or pill-box used as an advanced dressing station.

He was reported killed in Liverpool Daily Post on 08th November 1917.

AIRD - In honoured memory of our dear brother JACK, who made the supreme sacrifice October 6th 1917. Fondly remembered by his sister's Bon, Lil, Nell, Con, also brother and sister-in-law Josie (in America).

John is commemorated in the Hall of Remembrance, Liverpool Town Hall at Panel 16 Right

Soldiers Effects to his widow Ellen Elizabeth and pension to his widow and children John Henry, Stanley, Hilda and Thomas.

His widow remarried in 1922 to Nicholas Brett and had three more children Elizabeth born in 1924, Barbara born in 1926 and Edna born in 1934.

His father was incapacitated on the 1939 register at Belmont Road Institute, date of birth shown as 11th June 1859.  He died in 1940 at the age of 81.

His widow, Ellen, also died in 1940, aged 54.
