Pte 46761 John Power

  • Age: 36
  • From: Dublin
  • Regiment: The King's (Liverpool Regiment) 17th Btn
  • Died Sunday 4th February 1917
  • Commemorated at: St Pol Cc Ext
    Panel Ref: D.12

John was born in Dublin in 1881 the son of Thomas Power. A possible birth record in Dublin exists for John Power, born 20th March 1881 to Thomas and Bridget (nee Grimes) Power of 5 Thomas St, Ushers Quay, Dublin.

He was married to Mary (nee Morgan) in Liverpool Registry Office in 1914. They had a son also named John who was born on 13th August 1915.

John enlisted in Liverpool joining the 17th Battalion of The King's Liverpool Regiment as Private 46761. He served in “C” Company.  The amount of the War a gratuity suggests he had served about six months when he died.

John died of broncho-pneumonia contracted on active service on 04th February 1917 aged 36. He now rests at St. Pol Communal Cemetery, where his headstone inscription reads,

“R.I.P.”

St. Pol-sur-Ternoise was an administrative centre during the whole of the war, taken over by British troops from the French in March 1916; and No.12 Stationary Hospital was posted on the race-course near the town from the 1st June 1916, to 1st June 1919. The Extension was made alongside the "Cimetiere Thuillier" (which is more than 500 years old) by the French Tenth Army, and in March 1916-April 1918, the British Plot was added in the South-West quarter. There are now over 200, 1914-18 war casualties commemorated in this site. The British Plot covers an area of 1,111 square metres.

His widow Mary placed a notice in the Liverpool Daily Post on the first anniversary of his death, 4th February 1918:

“In loving memory of my dear husband, John Power, who died in France February 4, 1917.  Sadly missed by his Wife and Children, at 4 Lundie Street.”

(It is not known which children are referred to, as only one Power/Morgan birth is registered. It is possible that Mary had a child, or children, before she was married to John.)

Mary received John’s Army effects and a War Gratuity of £3, as well as a pension of 18/9d a week for herself and one child.

Pension card states he died of broncho pneumonia contracted in active service.

The CWGC records show his widow's details as Mary Cave (formerly Power) of 4 Lundie Street, Liverpool. Mary had remarried in 1920.

Mary, her second husband, Henry James Cave, and two children are still living at 4 Lundie Street in 1939.  His son John died in 1983, aged 67.

John is also commemorated in Liverpool’s Hall of Remembrance, Panel 53 and he is also commemorated on Ireland's National Roll of Honour.
