  • Regiment: LABOUR CORPS
  • Died on Sunday 2nd December 1917
  • Commemorated at: Hermies Hill Bc
    Panel Ref: I.A.6
Albert Parker was born on 20th February 1892, the son of Nathan Parker and his wife Elizabeth Ann (née Green). His parents, both from Liverpool, married in 1878 and had seven children, one of whom had died young. Albert was baptised on 20th June 1892 in St. Peter’s Church, Liverpool, his parents residence given as St. James Street, and his father’s occupation victualler.

In 1891 his parents had lived in Neston, Cheshire, his father listed as a beer house keeper.

Albert had older siblings John, George, Ada, and Nathan, and a younger sister Elizabeth (who died in 1911, aged 12).

In 1901 the family with six children, is living at 115 Gregson Street, Everton.  His father is 46, a collector of ‘aps’ (sewing machines), his mother is 43, John is 21, a mineral water bottler, George, 19, is a clerk, in a ship canal office, Ada is 18, Nathan is 15, an office boy for a sewing machine company, Albert is 9, at school, and Elizabeth is 2.

The 1911 Census finds the family living at 23 Anderson Street, Everton, Liverpool. His father, 56, is a dining room manager, his mother is 53, his brother John is 31, an assistant postman, Ada is 27, no occupation, Nathan, 25, is a flour mill hand. Albert is 19, a laundry porter, and Elizabeth is 12, at school.

Albert enlisted as Private 77260 in the 22nd (Reserve) Bn K.L.R.  The War Gratuity suggests he had served for less than a year when he died.  At some point he was transferred to 87th Company, Labour Corps.

Albert served overseas and died of wounds on 02nd December 1917.

He now rests in Hermies Hill British Cemetery, west of Cambrai.

Hermies was seized on the morning of the 9th April 1917, by a surprise attack of the 2nd and 3rd Australian Infantry Battalions. It was held against the advancing Germans on the 22nd March 1918, by the 17th Division, but evacuated on the following day; and it was retaken in September 1918. It was later "adopted", with Havrincourt, by the County Borough of Huddersfield. The cemetery was begun in November 1917, and carried on by fighting units until March 1918, and further graves were added in the following September. These original burials comprise nearly the whole of Plot I; the remaining three Plots were added after the Armistice by the concentration of graves from a wide area round Hermies.

There are now over 1,000, 1914-18 war casualties commemorated in this site. Of these, nearly 300 are unidentified and special memorials are erected to 28 soldiers from the United Kingdom and 3 from Australia, known or believed to be buried among them. Other special memorials record the names of 6 soldiers from the United Kingdom, buried in two German Cemeteries, whose graves were destroyed by shell fire. The cemetery covers an area of 3,629 square metres and is enclosed by a brick wall.

His death was reported as died of wounds in the Liverpool Daily Post on 09th January 1918.

His parents, living at 24 Sandheys Street, Liverpool, received his Army effects, including a War Gratuity of £3 and a pension of 8/- a week.

His parents both died in 1922, after which his sister Ada, at 48 Empire Street, Boaler Street, applied for the pension, but was refused.

All Military records show him as Albert, the Medal roll shows Alfred.

His brother Nathan had a son in 1924 whom he named Albert.

Sadly, Albert has not been identified on any memorial.

We currently have no further information on Albert Parker, If you have or know someone who may be able to add to the history of this soldier, please contact us.
