Bernard Conroy was born 1885 at Liverpool and was the son of Mary Conroy.

The 1911 Census shows the family living at 96 B Fountains Road, Kirkdale, Liverpool. His mother Mary is a widow aged 57, born 1854 occupation marine store labourer who was born in Hulme, Manchester. She lives with her son Bernard aged 25, born 1886 who is a rubber porter. 

He enlisted in Liverpool and was serving in the 19th Battalion, The King’s Liverpool Regiment as Private No 46129 when he was killed in action on the 26th September, 1917 during the Third Battle of Ypres.

Classes etc continued, good progress being made. Lt Col G. Rollo D.S.O. having returned from 89th Inf. Brigade resumed command. The brigade Concert party “The Optimists” showed to the battalion in the evening. At night the usual working parties were provided. On the returning of one of the parties 2 O.R. were killed by a shell and 2 O.R. severely wounded by the same. The wounded men died from their wounds after being admitted to hospital.       

Bernard was one of the two other ranks killed by the shell. He now rests at Oosttaverne Wood Cemetery, Whytschaete, Belgium.

He is also commemorated at St John the Evangelist‘s R.C. Church, Kirkdale.

Note: Birth records show Bernard was born in 1885 while the Census records hold the year 1886.
