He had five known siblings Eva, Henry, Lilian, William (who died in infancy and whom William was named after), and Doris. William was baptised on 22nd October 1893 at St. Peter's Church, Liverpool.

The Census of 1901 shows the family are living at 51, St Albans, Everton. William is 7 years of age and lives with his parents and three siblings. His father, John, is a 39 year old general labourer born in Liverpool, whilst his mother, Jane, is 36 years of age, she was also born in Liverpool. His siblings are recorded as; Eva aged 12, Henry aged 11 and Lilian aged 10.

His parents are recorded as having been married for 23 years and have had seven children, five of whom have survived.

William enlisted in Liverpool joining the 18th Battalion of The King's Liverpool Regiment as Private 24573. He died at home on 24th January 1915, aged 21, and is buried at Everton Cemetery, his illness presumably exacerbated as a result of his military service as he has a CWGC headstone.

Soldiers Effects  to father John, Pensions for both William and Henry to father

His brother Henry (Harry) Hayworth, served with the 19th Battalion, KLR as Private 34295 and was killed in action at Guillemont on 30th July 1916 aged 26. Harry's body was not recovered from the battlefield or was subsequently lost as he is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme.

Harry's memorial notice in the Liverpool Echo 30 July 1918 reads;

HAYWORTH - In loving memory of Private HARRY HAYWORTH (Liverpool Pals), killed in action, July 30, 1916.

To meet, to know, to love, and then to part,

Is a sad tragedy for any human heart.

Never forgotten by Lil, and all at 42 Bradewell Street.

William's father had suffered a number of grievous losses in  a short period of time. His wife Jane died aged 48 in 1913, his sons William and Harry in 1915 and 1916 respectively. His daughter Lilian died in 1920.

John had remarried in 1917 and died in 1934 aged 73. He rests alongside his first wife Jane in Everton Cemetery.
