Alfred Edwin Hill was born on the 08th January 1892 1892 in Bush Hill Park, Middlesex. He was the son of Charles and Mary Elizabeth Hill (nee Gunstead), of 22, Hawthorne Grove, Enfield, Middlesex. They were married on the 10th June 1881 at All Saints Church, Edmonton. Alfred was baptised on the 28th February at St Andrew's Church, Market Place, Enfield.

The 1901 Census finds the family living at 44 Sixth Avenue, Enfield. His father, Charles, is a 50 year old builders labourer, born in Enfield, his mother, Mary, is a 53 year old born in Norfolk and has no occupation listed. They have four children listed int he household, Charles W. is an 18 year old builders clerk, Ernest G. is a 17 year old warehouse porter, Fuller R. is a 15 year old nurseryman gardener, and Alfred E. is a 9 year old scholar.

The 1911 Census shows the family have moved and are now living at 47 Main Avenue, Bush Hill Park, Enfield. His father is now recorded as a 55 year old builders labourer. his mother is now recorded as 57 years of age, born Northwold, Norfolk. They advised that they had been married for 30 years and have had five children four of whom have survived. Ernest G. is a 26 year old general labourer,  Fuller Robert is a 24 year old general labourer, and Alfred Edwin is aged 19, and is employed as a newsagent. All three children were born in Bush Hill Park.

He enlisted in Tottenham, London and originally served as Private 20430, of the East Surrey Regiment. Following a transfer, he was serving in the 18th Battalion of The King’s Liverpool Regiment as Private No 53111.

He was listed as wounded with an incorrect Regiment and service number in the Enfield Gazette on Friday 15 December 1916;

Wounded.

Royal Fusiliers. Pte. H. B. Elton, 3620 (Palmers Green); Pte. A. E. Hill, 5311 (Enfield).

He was quoted in the Enfield Gazette on Friday 30 November 1917;

It gives me great pleasure to thank you and all the kind subscribers for the most welcome parcel. My two chums and myself made quite a feast from some of the contents quite a luxury. Where we are just now we cannot get anything like this- only the usual Army rations. It is quite consoling to us to know the people of dear old Enfield are so often thinking of us. I can assure you I look for my "Observer" each week for news of the old place, that being my birthplace. Let the people of Enfield know what a great thing they are doing by subscribing to your Parcels Fund.

- Pte. A. E. Hill (King's Liverpool Regt.).

He was killed in action on the 07th May 1918, aged 25, during the German Spring Offensive. He was one of a reinforcement draft of 150 men who joined 18 KLR from the East Surrey (possibly from 8 or 9 Battalion) prior to April 1917. The war diary of 18th Battalion  K.L.R. records that on 07th May 1918 the Battalion was out of the line and 'resting'.

However two other men are listed as kia on this date - it is possible that they were killed as part of a working party.

His death was reported in the Enfield Gazette on Friday 14 June 1918;

PTE A. E. HILL, whose death has been officially notified. Aged 25, he saw two years' Active service in France with the East Surrey Regt., and subsequently with the King's Liverpool Regt. Prior to joining up Pte. Hill, who resided with his parents in Main-avenue, Bush Hill Park, carried on a newsagent's business. He was well known in football circles, being a popular member of the Enfield Wednesday F.C. The deceased soldier, who was educated at the Bush Hill Park Council School, has three brothers serving.

He was reported killed in the Weekly Casualty List (War Office & Air Ministry ) on Tuesday 25 June 1918:

KING'S (LIVERPOOL REGIMENT). - Hill 53111 A. E. (Enfield)

Alfred's body was not recovered or was subsequently lost as he has no known grave and is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial.

Those United Kingdom and New Zealand servicemen who died after August 16th 1917 are named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, a site which marks the furthest point reached by Commonwealth forces in Belgium until nearly the end of the war.

The Tyne Cot Memorial now bears the names of almost 35,000 officers and men whose graves are not known. The memorial, designed by Sir Herbert Baker with sculpture by Joseph Armitage and F.V. Blundstone, was unveiled by Sir Gilbert Dyett on 20 June 1927.

The memorial forms the north-eastern boundary of Tyne Cot Cemetery, which was established around a captured German blockhouse or pill-box used as an advanced dressing station.

Alfred earned the British War Medal and the Victory Medal, indicating that he did not serve overseas until 1916.

Soldiers Effects, Army Pay of £6 4s 10d and pension went to mother Mary. His father Charles received a £9 War Gratuity. The pension cards have the name Edwin rather than Edward.

His mother, Mary, died aged 70, in 1919.

On the 1921 Census at 22 Hawthorne Grove, Enfield, Alfred's widowed father Charles W., aged 68, is living with his married son Charles and Rose Hill. He is not present on the 1939 Register, he died, aged 73, in 1927.
