Edward Jackson was born in 1893 in Northwich and was the son of John Jackson and his wife Mary Elizabeth (nee Pepper), of 73 Royle St, Northwich, Cheshire who had married in December 1882 in Northwich. He was a native of Winsford, Cheshire.
The 1901 Census shows Edward living with his grandparents at 358 Station Road, Winsford.
The grandparents are Ephraim Pepper, aged 70, born 1831 in Audley, Staffordshire and he is employed as a salt boiler, his wife Eliza is aged 83, born 1818 in Staffordshire. Edward is shown as being born in 1895 and is living with his brother Clement aged 15, born 1886 and employed as an office boy.
The 1911 Census shows the family living at 358 Station Road, Winsford.
His mother, Mary Elizabeth, is a 54 year old widow, born 1857 in Chesterton, Staffordshire. She had five children and at the time of the Census, four siblings were still living at the address; Annie aged 23 born 1888, is a Fustian Cutter Velvet Making, Edward aged 18, born 1893 is a Grocers assistant, Reuben aged 15, born 1896 is a Wagon Builder’s labourer and John aged 12, born 1899 is at school.
He enlisted in Manchester and served originally as Private 3509 in the Manchester Regiment and following a transfer was serving in the 19th Battalion of The King’s Liverpool Regiment as Private No 52229 when he died of wounds on the 16th November 1916, aged 23 during the Somme Offensive.
He now rests at Humbercamps Communal Cemetery Extension, France, where his headstone bears the epitaph:
“NOT NOW BUT IN THE COMING YEARS SOMETIME IN HEAVEN WE'LL UNDERSTAND”
There are two War Graves in the Communal Cemetery and 79 in the Extension The EXTENSION is on the North- Eastern side of the Communal Cemetery, in part of an old orchard. It was used mainly by Field Ambulances, from September 1915 to February 1917 and for 6 burials in March 1918. It covers an area of 753 square yards.
Edward is commemorated on the Winsford War Memorial.
