Albert James Johnson was born in 1893 at Daybrook, Nottingham the son of Arthur Johnson and his wife Annie (nee Kirk), and the brother of Leonard Claude Johnson. His parents had married in September 1885 in Nottingham.
The 1901 Census shows the family living at 25, Colborne Street, Nottingham. His father, Arthur, is aged 35, employed as a lace maker, his mother, Annie, is aged 37 has no occupation listed. At the time of the Census they have four children, Arthur aged 15 who is employed as an errand boy, Annie aged 12 and Albert James aged 6 are both at school and Claude is aged 3.
The 1911 Census shows the family living at 133 Hartley Road Nottingham. His father Arthur aged 45, born in Radford, Nottinghamshire in 1866, his occupation is a lace maker His mother Annie aged 47, born 1864 no occupation and born in Nottingham. They have been married for twenty five years and have had four children. Albert James is aged 17, born 1894 and works in the lace trade and Leonard Claude aged 13, born 1898 is at school.
He was the husband of Martha (nee Tomlinson) of 19 Mitchell Street, Old Radford, Nottingham. They had married in March 1914 and had two children Albert born 31st March 1912 and Gladys born 09th October 1914.
He enlisted in Nottingham and originally served as Private 268, North Midland Cyclist Company. Following a transfer he was serving in the 17th Battalion of The King’s Liverpool Regiment as Sergeant No 57673 when he was killed in action on the 30th August, 1917, aged 28, during the Third Battle of Ypres (Passchendaele).
Albert now rests at Dranoutre Military Cemetery, Belgium.
