Reginald Carter Trewhitt was born in Sunderland in the second quarter of 1894 the son of Charles Trewhitt and his wife Annie (nee Carter) of 9 Fordland Place, Sunderland.

His father died in the December quarter of 1900 aged 37.

The 1901 Census finds Reginald aged 6 living at 86 Clifford Street, Sunderland with his widowed mother Annie aged 36 and siblings Charles G. 11, Kate E. 9, Benjamin E. 3 and Anthony J. 1. Also present is Annie's brother George W. Carter who is a 26 year old butcher and is declared as a widower. There is also a boarder in the household.

The 1911 Census shows the family living at 15 Rosslyn Street, Sunderland. His mother, Annie, is head of the household she is a widow aged 46, born in Sunderland in 1865. She had been married for twenty three years and had five children of which four were still living at home. The children were all born in Sunderland and are listed as; Charles aged 21 is a blacksmith, Reginald aged 16 is a grocer's assistant, Ernest aged 13, and Anthony John aged 11, are both at school. Annie's brother George William Carter a widower aged 36, born 1875 and a butcher.

Reginald enlisted in Sunderland and was formerly 114, Army Cyclist Corps and was serving in the 20th Battalion, The King’s Liverpool Regiment as Private No 57755 when he was killed in action on the 06th January 1918.

Reginald has no known grave and is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial in Belgium.

Those United Kingdom and New Zealand servicemen who died after August 16th 1917 are named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, a site which marks the furthest point reached by Commonwealth forces in Belgium until nearly the end of the war.

The Tyne Cot Memorial now bears the names of almost 35,000 officers and men whose graves are not known. The memorial, designed by Sir Herbert Baker with sculpture by Joseph Armitage and F.V. Blundstone, was unveiled by Sir Gilbert Dyett on 20 June 1927.

The memorial forms the north-eastern boundary of Tyne Cot Cemetery, which was established around a captured German blockhouse or pill-box used as an advanced dressing station.

Medal Roll shows both 18th and 20th Battalions so it is possible that he transferred to the 18th Battalion K.L.R. before finally moving to the 20th Battalion.

Soldiers Effects and Pension to mother Annie.
