The 1901 Census shows the family living at House 10, Georges Street, (No.6 Urban, South Centre, Cork. Samuel is 10 years of age and is living with both parents and seven siblings. His father is 42 years of age, born in Russia and is a Tailor by trade, whilst his mother is 41 years of age and a Tailoress born in England. His siblings are: Rosa 17 who is also declared as a Tailoress, Lena aged 15 who is a Tailors apprentice, Charley aged 13, Leopold aged 11, David aged 8 Annie aged 7 and Maurice aged 4. Samuel was a member of the Jewish Lads Brigade.

However his medal index card and medal roll show only service with the 18th battalion of The King's Liverpool Regiment as Private 58007. He was subsequently transferred to the 8th Battalion of K.L.R. and died of wounds at 46 Casualty Clearing Station on 22nd September 1917, aged 26 and now rests at Mendinghem Military Cemetery in Belgium, where his headstone bears the epitaph:

The 1/8th Battalion Soldiers Effects and Pension were sent to his widow Ellen. Another pension was payable to Lizzie Barker for an illegitimate child by the name of Teresa Agnes Barker.
