The 1901 Census shows the family living at 3, Furlong Street, Liverpool. His father James aged 38, born in Wexford, Ireland in 1863 is a dock labourer, his mother, Margaret, aged 40, born in Ireland in 1861 has no occupation listed. At the taking of the Census they have three children living with them, Christopher aged 10, born 1891, James aged 8, born 1893 and William aged 6, born 1895. The children were all born in Liverpool. They also have a boarder named Thomas Stafford a dock labourer from Ireland aged 48, born 1853 living at the address.
His mother Margaret died March 1905.The 1911 Census shows the family living at 88 Doncaster Street, Liverpool. His father, James, is now recorded as a widower, aged 52, born 1859 (1901 Census shows year of birth as 1863) and is still employed as a dock labourer. At the time of the Census he has his three sons living with him, Christopher aged 20, is a cap maker, James aged 18, is a soap packer and William aged 16 is an errand boy for a grocery. He also has his sister in law June Whitmore aged 46, born 1865 and employed as a housekeeper and she was a resident of Wexford, Ireland.
He was wounded in action during the offensive at Le Transloy and admitted to No.6 General Hospital in Rouen. A report on 14th October records a gunshot wound to the left l(eg?) (British Army ‘burnt documents’). James died of his wounds the next day and was laid to rest in St. Sever Cemetery, Rouen.
During the First World War, Commonwealth camps and hospitals were stationed on the southern outskirts of Rouen. A base supply depot and the 3rd Echelon of General Headquarters were also established in the city.
Almost all of the hospitals at Rouen remained there for practically the whole of the war. They included eight general, five stationary, one British Red Cross, one labour hospital, and No. 2 Convalescent Depot. A number of the dead from these hospitals were buried in other cemeteries, but the great majority were taken to the city cemetery of St. Sever. In September 1916, it was found necessary to begin an extension.
The Cemetery and the Extension adjoin each other but have separate Registers.
St. Sever Cemetery contains 3,082 Commonwealth burials of the First World War. There is also 1 French burial and 1 non war service burial here. The adjoining cemetery extension contains 8,348 Commonwealth burials of the First World War (ten of them unidentified) and in Block "S" there are 328 from the Second World War (18 of them unidentified). There are also 8 Foreign National burials here.
The Commonwealth plots were designed by Sir Reginald Blomfield.
