  • Regiment: The King's (Liverpool Regiment) 19th Btn
  • K.I.A Friday 22nd March 1918
  • Commemorated at: Savy Brit Cem
    Panel Ref: Roupy Rd. Mem.47

Phillip Linder was born in July 1896 in Hull and resided in Manchester and he was the son of Isaac Lande. He attended Southall Street School, Strangeways, which opened a Jewish Mixed department in 1891. The Christian Mixed Department closed c.1901. He joined the school in 1903.

A check on FamilySearch brought up that there were existing service records for an 11th Battalion man, born Hull. He enlisted on the 20th August 1914 with a stated age of 19 at Manchester and was given service number of K/13000. He had repeated bouts of misconduct and absence over the 14/15 winter and on the 17th March 1915 he was discharged for misconduct.

His Next of kin are given as father Isaac, mother Rachael, brother Lazarus and sister Kate, all living at 117 Stocks Street, Manchester. Philips' occupation is shown as Waterproofer.

Assuming Philip gave the right age and place of birth then the nearest thing to a match in the Civil Record was that of a Philip Linde which was recorded in the Hull District of Yorkshire in the July to September quarter, (Q3), of 1896.

The 1911 Census of England and Wales shows the family living at 36 Honey Street, Cheetham, Manchester

Father  - Isaac Lande, aged 40, a Furniture Dealer, born Warsaw, Russia, a Russian Jew (He signed himself Issak Lande),

Mother – Betsy Lande, aged 35, born Warsaw, Russia, a Russian Jew.

The couple have been married 19 years and have had 7 children, all then still alive.

Lazarus Lande, aged 18. Makintosh Worker, born Warsaw, Russia, a Russian Jew.

Philip Lande, aged 15, Tailor, born Hull, Yorkshire.

Harry Lande, aged 13, at School, born Manchester

Katy Lande, aged 11, at School, born Manchester

Lisy Lande, aged 9, at School, born Sheffield, Yorkshire

Annie Lande, aged 7, at School, born Manchester

Benny Lande, aged 2, born Manchester

He enlisted in Manchester and was formerly 4087, Manchester Regiment and serving in the 19th Battalion, The King’s Liverpool Regiment as Private No 52242 when he was killed in action on the 22nd March 1918, aged 21 during the German Spring Offensive.

The Battalion diary gives an insight in to the evnts of the day:

22nd  GERMAINE – HAM- MOYENCOURT

The battalion moved up accordingly being in position at 6:30 a.m. About 3pm the enemy attacked the left of our position and advanced on our left flank towards FLUQUIERES. At 4:30 pm an attack was launched on our front and the enemy forced his way through on our right. The remainder of the Battalion was forced to retire to south of FLUQUIERES. During this engagement the Battalion lost 11 Officers and About 21 O.R. The order was given to retire to the defences at HAM. The Battalion by this time was very weak, and passing through the 20th Division took up positions in HAM, as ordered, getting into position at 2am.

The CWGC Graves Registration form shows that Joseph, along with a number of others from the 19th Bn, was buried by the Germans, but after the war a Special Memorial was erected in Savy British Cemetery :

“To the memory of these 68 British Soldiers, Killed in Action in March 1918, and buried at the time in the German Cemetery on the St. Quentin-Roupy Road, whose graves are now lost.”

Philip has a CWGC headstone at Savy British Cemetery.

Savy was taken by the 32nd Division on the 1st April 1917, after hard fighting, and Savy Wood on the 2nd. On the 21st March 1918 Savy and Roupy were successfully defended by the 30th Division, but the line was withdrawn after nightfall. The village and the wood were retaken on the 17th September 1918 by the 34th French Division, fighting on the right of the British IX Corps.

Savy British Cemetery was made in 1919, and the graves from the battlefields and from the following small cemeteries in the neighbourhood were concentrated into it.

There are now over 850, 1914-18 war casualties commemorated in this site. Of these, more than half are unidentified. Memorials are erected in the cemetery to 68 soldiers (chiefly of the 19th King's Liverpools and the 17th Manchesters), buried by the Germans in their cemetery on the St. Quentin-Roupy road, whose graves were destroyed by shell fire.

The Cemetery covers an area of 2,555 square metres and is enclosed by a low rubble wall.

He is mentioned in the British Jewry Book of Honour as 4087 Pte. Linder, P., 19th Btn. King's Liverpool Regiment.

Philip Linder's pension card has next of kin as father I Linder, 27 Acomb St, Chorlton on Medlock.

We currently have no further information on Phillip Linder, If you have or know someone who may be able to add to the history of this soldier, please contact us.
