Hugh Morris was born in Wavertree, Liverpool, on the 03rd January 1896, the son of Hugh Morris and his wife Elizabeth Jane (née Davis). His parents, were both born in Liverpool, and married in 1882, and had ten children, three of whom died young. Hugh had an older half sister Emily, older full siblings Elizabeth, William, John, and Lilian and younger siblings Robert and Henry. Hugh was baptised in St. Mary’s, Wavertree, on 14th February 1896, his parents’ residence given as 30 Rathbone Road, and is father’s occupation listed as rope maker.
In 1901 they are still at 30 Rathbone Road, Wavertree, with seven children. His father is a rope maker, Hugh is 5 (recorded incorrectly on the census form as 15).
In 1911 they are living at 194 Rathbone Road with four children at home. His father, 57, is a rope-maker, Hugh is 15, a rope-maker’s labourer. His mother is 47, Lilian, 17, is an assistant overseer at a biscuit manufacturer, Robert is 12 and Henry 10.
As his military record has not survived, the details of Hugh’s service are not known. He enlisted, most probably in Liverpool, as Private 36438, 19th (Pals) Battalion of The King’s Liverpool Regiment. He was subsequently transferred, likely after being hospitalised for wounds or disease, to 726th Coy., Labour Corps, and given the regimental number 370747. The Medal Roll shows Hugh had previously served in the Cheshire Regiment, as Private 241674.
Hugh died in the Detention Hospital, Namur, Belgium, on 16th October 1919, aged 23. His Pension Record states that he died of valvular disease of the heart.
He now rests in Belgrade Communal Cemetery, Namur, Belgium, where his headstone inscription reads,
“THY WILL BE DONE”.
“THY WILL BE DONE”.
Namur was attacked by the Germans on 20 August 1914; the forts were destroyed by heavy artillery, and at midnight on 23-24 the garrison was evacuated. The town then remained in German hands until the end of the war.
Belgrade Cemetery contains 249 Commonwealth burials of the First World War, most of them dating from the ten months when casualty clearing stations were then posted to Namur after the Armistice. There is also one burial of the Second World War.
His CWGC certificate shows 36436, 19th Bn K.L.R. The Graves Registration erroneously shows 16th Bn K.L.R., transferred to 726 Coy., Labour Corps.
His father Hugh died on the 07th August 1920 aged 66.
His mother Elizabeth was eligible to receive Hugh’s effects, including a War Gratuity of £19-10s, and a pension of 7/- a week. She died in 1926 aged 63.
