During the First World War, Le Treport was an important hospital centre and by July 1916, the town contained three general hospitals (the 3rd, 16th and 2nd Canadian), No.3 Convalescent Depot and Lady Murray's B.R.C.S. Hospital. The 7th Canadian, 47th and 16th USA General Hospitals arrived later, but all of the hospitals had closed by March 1919. As the original military cemetery at Le Treport filled, it became necessary to use the new site at Mont Huon. There are now 2,128 Commonwealth burials of the First World War in the cemetery and seven from the Second World War. The cemetery also contains more than 200 German war graves. The cemetery was designed by Sir Reginald Blomfield.

Christopher James Robertson was born in the summer of 1893 in Milfield, Sunderland, Durham, the son of Robert Calver Robertson and his wife Jane (née Lough). Robert, born in Monkwearmouth, Sunderland, and Jane, in Hartlepool, married in 1882 and had nine children, two of whom died young. Christopher had older siblings Robert, born in 1882, Harold 1885, Priscilla 1887 (died in infancy), Annie 1888, and Jane 1891, and younger siblings John 1895, Sarah 1897 (died at age 2), and William 1900. Before Christopher’s birth his father had worked as a coachman/groom.
In 1901 the family is living at 29 Morgan Street, Southwick, Durham, with seven children ages 3 months to 18 years. Both his parents are 38, his father is an engine driver, Christopher is 7.
In 1911 they are living in four rooms at 29 Barclay Street, Monkwearmouth, Sunderland, with six of the children at home. His father, 48, is a smelter at the aluminium works, his mother is also 48, Harold, 26, is a brass moulded in a foundry, Annie is 22, no occupation, Jane, 20, is a dress maker working from home, Christopher is 17, a house painter, John, 15, is a coal miner/ pony driver, William is 10. Also in the household is his father’s aunt, Elizabeth Atkinson, 61.
SDGW shows that Christopher enlisted in Sunderland as #313, Army Cyclist Corps, then was transferred to the 18th Bn King’s (Liverpool) Regiment with regimental number 57829, subsequently to the 20th Bn, and finally to the 17th Bn, all “Pals” battalions of the K.L.R., before being transferred to the 13th Bn K.L.R. The War Gratuity, based on rank and length of service, suggests that he enlisted in about June 1915.
In August 1918 the 13th Bn was involved in attacks at Bapaume, in September at Ecouste, and in October at Ribecourt. It is not known when Christopher was wounded, but he died of his wounds on 10th October 1918 and now lies in Mont Huon Military Cemetery, Le Tréport, Seine-Maritime. He was 25 years old.
It is not clear from the pension card, in the name of Mrs. Jane Robertson at 5 Moreland Street, Sunderland, whether a pension was awarded. His parents were eligible to receive Christopher’s effects of £25-7-2d and a War Gratuity of £19 but there is no record of these payments being made.
His mother died aged 60 in 1923, and his father in 1937 aged 74.
